The problem with imitating Bloodborne is that Bloodborne exists already. As the reputation of Bloodbornes has continued to grow over the years, it could be hard to overcome a comparison.

Let’s be clear. Steelrising does not show a Bloodborne Virus, but it’s more likely to be than you expect. In a story that had the original picture of Paris in 1789, you played as Aegis, a female automaton who served as a bodyguard to Queen Marie Antoinette. As a revolution army terrorises the city streets, youre sent to seek the king to stop the massacre.

With its wild premise and French ambiance, the artist is away from its inspirations. After an article on the Queens grounds, you hit a boat to Paris where robots are carrying weapons at the burning streets, and death’s bodies occupy every corner. While the visuals are sometimes muddy due to the dreary, mechanical colour palette, a sense of place exists throughout the scene with the addition of different recreations like Versailles and Tuileries Garden as a refreshing change from the genres norm.

Of course, Paris doesn’t usually have killer robots parading around. Their creations, even though not as well messed up with FromSoftwares finest, inject personality into their metallic squad with tin can heads who strut around with deadly balls on chains in trees. Robots are often the ones with which we aren’t paying attention to and hate at any game, even though they have a fun clunk when taken down.

The combat makes sense, also to the extreme play involving Bloodborne. While there are weapons which have shields as a secondary function, for the most part steelrising is designed to the challenge with various halberds, chains, claws, guns and spinning wheels to find. Aegis can jump, giving advantage to aerial attacks, and to escape systems.

While there is no chance to gain back health with follow-up attacks like Bloodborne, Steelrising has a recharge-tamed system similar to the Niohs Ki Pulse mechanic. When you use a window to recharge, the key is pressing the button. If you abuse the mechanic too often, you will be punished for a few seconds in freeze. You can completely ignore the system, but if it fails, it can encourage them to endure that terrible desperation while the enemy fails.

The game is divided in eight main levels, which are exactly the same as a Soulslike. Progression is related to chairs called Vestals (d’ordinaire bonfires), in which you gain Aegis abilities by building up the Anima Essence of your enemies by using anima Essence, to deeds of flesh and soul. You can take shortcuts back to your earlier areas, in order to instil the same relief as FromSoftware. However, it is rather generous and rarely so smartly designed, with many giant staph gates on which you can easily identify and reveal where you should head next.

Steelrising throws also Metroidvania-style elements. In defeating others, you earn the ability to unlock new areas, whether you do it with walls or to glamorize obstacles.

I wonder if this isn’t what my aim is to get past – as you often encounter ‘tied’ areas. There isn’t any rapid travel between Vestals, so you should take time off to jump between levels to return to your horse-less carriage. It’s also important to encourage a discovery of shortcuts, but not all that much less difficult to return to past level than hoped.

For those who are involved in the difficulties debate around Soulslike titles, Steelrising presents an admirable answer in Assist Mode. Instead of rigid levels of difficulty, there’s sliders to reduce damage taken, help increase stamina regeneration or to allow players to keep Anima Essence after death. That might be the shortest Soulslike that can be downloaded to newcomers and a inviting proposition for those who are usually intimidated by genres demanding nature.

Steelrising, despite the positives, is far from great competition in some areas. There are moments when it’s direct comparisons to Bloodborne, with the voice of civilians locked in their homes being spoken for minor quests. But this disappointing in their execution and offer less reward or insight. The enemy AI often is bleak and easy to exploit, with certain boss fights with little or no need to kill something. The developers said one day in a row should correct some bugs.

Steelrising isn’t the most polished soul of all time, but its innovative choice is more powerful to adopt as a seasoned leader, and has special personality and great design especially for newcomers. The sexy similarities that it draws with Bloodborne and Nioh rarely annoy themselves, but the well realised French setting, euphoric options and solid combat make it an interesting, if not totally revolutionary, take that might be reversible.

In Short: The competent soulslike lifted by their alternative history premise and Parisian setting, but its not quite enough to match its obvious inspirations.

A book about Revolutionary France was about to be published and later this year has a great ability to read it. Combat is engaging and teaches them many weapons. Robot enemy design provides a distinctive flavour. There are many options for access to the Internet.

As for standards, it doesn’t reflect the inspiration they draw from infrastructural thinking. Like some boring AI, you don’t feel the same for polished. Metroidvania elements feel tucked up.
