Crystal Dynamics announced it has taken full control of the various IPs it created, including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain. Crystal Dynamics was one of the most popular western studios of Square Enix. The developer was responsible for some of the most western games from Square Enix, notably the incredibly well-received Tomb Raider reboots. Crystal Dynamics was also tasked with bringing Marvel’s greatest heroes into the gaming world via Marvel’s Avengers. The game received mixed reviews, but it showed how much Square Enix trusted Crystal Dynamics. Of course, the relationship halted just a few years ago following a recent deal.

Square Enix recently sold the Crystal Dynamics and other studios to the Embracer Group, so that Square Enix doesn’t own these studios or their respective properties anymore. Now that the deal is finished, Crystal Dynamics announced that it has full control over franchises such as Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain. If this really would change much, would Crystal Dynamics allow it to revisit a franchise that it wasn’t able to under Square Enix?

“It’s my pleasure to say that Crystal Dynamics has taken over many game franchises, including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain, said Crystal Dynamics in a blog post. “As a result of this change, Crystal Dynamics (or its affiliated company) is now the owner of these games and controller of their gameplay and personal data.”

It has already been confirmed that Crystal Dynamics is working on a new game for Tomb Raider, something that most people expected due to the three wins. I’ll probably be talking about it now. But it’s nice to know that it’ll be coming. There are a few leaks that show the direction Crystal Dynamics takes the series, but the game is probably a long time away from releasing it.

What do you hope to see from Crystal Dynamics now that they aren’t connected to Square Enix?
